 – Step 4: Apply the paint

It is possible to paint melamine provided that the surface is adequately cleaned and prepared. Indeed, melamine is a smooth surface on which the paint may not adhere if you apply it without preparation.

Here are the steps to paint melamine.

Which paint should I use to paint melamine?

You can paint melamine using acrylic, alkyd, or glycerol paint.

It is necessary to apply a special melamine primer (undercoat) before applying the paint. Indeed, the melamine surface being too smooth, the paint would poorly adhere if applied directly.

The primer is a resistant paint with a covering power and strong adhesion. Depending on the type of paint you are applying (glycerol type oil paint or acrylic type water paint), choose a primer adapted to the paint (acrylic, glycerol, etc.).

 1. Degrease the surface

Degrease the melamine surface to remove grease and stains.

 – Wear gloves to protect your hands.

 – Apply an acetone-type degreaser with a cloth or sponge.

 – Scrub to remove marks and stains.

 – Rinse thoroughly with clear water.

 – Allow drying.

 2. Sand the melamine surface

Once the melamine surface is cleaned and dry, sand it before applying a primer (undercoat of paint). Sanding the melamine surface will increase the adhesion of the primer.

 – Use fine-grit sandpaper (80 to 100 grit).

 – Lightly smooth the surface in circular motions.

 – Do not press too hard when sanding, and do not over-emphasize any one area to avoid digging into the surface.

 – Once the surface is sanded, clean the dust with a damp cloth.

 3. Apply a primer

Begin by protecting the floor with protective tarpaulins.

Apply the primer with a roller. The primer undercoat allows the finishing paint to adhere well to the substrate.

 – Pour the primer into a paint tray.

 – Dip the roller halfway into the primer to load it.

 – Wring out the roller on the wringer grid to remove excess.

 – Apply the primer on the melamine surface:

 ◦ Lightly press the roller on the surface to be painted. Do not press too hard to prevent the primer from dripping.

 ◦ Paint vertical stripes and then “cross” the passages by painting horizontal stripes.

 ◦ Once you’ve applied the primer, smooth by running the roller, without loading it, from top to bottom and bottom to top.

 ◦ Allow drying.

 – If the melamine color is dark, apply a second coat of primer using the same procedure.

Tip: To keep the roll between two coats of primer without washing it and drying, wrap it tightly with cling film or wrap it with several newspaper sheets.

 4. Apply the paint

Once the primer is perfectly dry:

 – Mix the paint with a stick to homogenize the color.

 – Fill the tray with paint.

 – Apply the paint with a roller, from the center to the edges:

 ◦ Dip the roller into the paint.

 ◦ Wring out the roller to remove excess paint.

 ◦ Paint in vertical strips and then cross the passages by painting horizontal stripes.

 ◦ Smooth the paint: Roll over the roller by pressing it lightly, without loading it with paint, to unify the paint.

 – Let the paint dry for the time indicated on the package.

Tip: If you are applying oil paint, ventilate the room in which you are painting.

Apply a second coat of paint if necessary:

 – Wait until the first coat is completely dry.

 – Sand very lightly.

 – Paint in the same way as for the first coat of paint.

That’s it. You are now done with painting melamine. Please, remember to share your comments in the section below.
