– Step 5: Trim the edges
Glass cloth is a durable coating that can be applied to the ceiling to strengthen it and hide any defects.
Installing glass cloth on the ceiling requires organization and surface preparation, as the top must be clean and smooth.
Prepare the ceiling by stripping old paint, filling holes and cracks, dusting, and washing.
Once the ceiling is ready, arrange for installing the glass cloth and then lay the cloth strips.
Here are the materials and steps for installing glass cloth on the ceiling.
1. Cut the glass cloth strips
– Measure the length of the glass cloth roll; it corresponds to the width of a strip.
– Measure the width of the ceiling; it corresponds to the length of a strip of glass cloth.
– Cut the glass cloth strips with a ruler and a cutter. Allow for an extra margin of about 5 cm on each side.
Draw marks to guide you during installation
Mark out markers to guide you during the installation of the glass cloth on the ceiling, especially for installing the first strip: once you have measured the width of a strip, mark out the markers with a ruler and a felt-tip pen.
2. Coat the ceiling with glue
What is the starting point for installing the glass cloth on the ceiling?
Start the installation of the glass cloth on the ceiling from a corner.
So that the seams (the joints between two strips) are not visible, lay the fabric in the direction of the light.
Glue the ceiling
– Protect the floor with newspaper or plastic sheeting.
– If necessary, dust the ceiling with a broom.
– Spread the glue in a relatively thick layer, the width of a strip; use a roller and a brush for this purpose:
◦ Spread the glue on the edges and corners with a brush.
◦ Spread the glue over the rest of the surface with a roller.
3. Lay the first strip
It takes two to lay the glass cloth strips on the ceiling:
– Lay the first strip of glass cloth:
◦ Roll up the strip, leaving about 50 cm.
◦ Climb the step ladder and lay the canvas, starting at the corner of the ceiling.
◦ Be sure to leave a border of about 5 cm.
◦ Run your hand over the sheet to secure it.
◦ Marouflez with the spatula to smooth the glass cloth, chasing air bubbles and excess glue.
◦ Wipe the glue off the glass cloth with a damp sponge.
– Unroll the strip. The second person then holds it down with a broom while gradually laying and securing the glass cloth.
4. Lay the next strips
Once the first sheet of glass cloth has been installed on the ceiling, install the following sheets:
– Glue the ceiling with the roller to the width of one strip each time.
– Apply the strips, making sure to have neat joints.
– If a strip is laid crooked, slowly slide it to align it.
5. Trim the edges
Once you’ve finished installing the glass cloth on the ceiling, trim the edges.
– Place a spatula at the corner of the ceiling and wall and press firmly.
– Cut the edges with the cutter, guiding yourself along with the spatula.
